I have made a list of all 104 3000m times under 3m 40s that I am aware of. Of these, 26 were skated during a 5000m race, which are highlighted in yellow: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1phhhZ55PxzPbW-8H_fdeSr90xFDF49KsMIfy39J3_Vw/edit?usp=sharing
The fastest from a 5000m is 3:36.16 by Sven Kramer, set in Calgary in February 2020. That was in a quartet though as it was in the b-division. Yuskov’s 3:36.40 was in a pair and holds the record for fastest 3000m ever in a pair.

The reason for the quartet advantage is mostly because there’s a lot of people warming up and creating some wind, right? In that case then Bosker did have some of that advantage as only his race was a pair and all the ones after were quartets. The same goes for Roest’s 3:36.80 as you can see quite a few people warming up during his pair on the livestream: https://www.youtube.com/live/bAq58Rm7FWs?si=ePqLFfP2KhPIjtkV&t=22557
The fastest time I am not sure of wether it had anything to do with a quartet is funnily enough Ervik’s official WR of 3:37.28. I can find the old results but they don’t say if it was pair or quartet. Two entries later at the 3:37.37 of Pedersen we find the fastest result where we are sure all races were skated in pairs.

Roest’s 3:35.26 was skated in a quartet actually, and thus so was Kramer’s 3:35.93. Yuskov’s 3:34.37 was in a quartet too, as were Pedersen’s 3:34.66 and Roest’s 3:35.49.
The fastest time skated in a pair is Bosker’s 3:36.33 in Calgary in November 2017.
What a time by Peder Kongshaug! 1:46.71 is the fastest sea-level time ever in August by a full second, and he’s even two seconds faster than last year at the sommerløpet.
The 10000m junior record is not official anyway, the ISU hasn’t got a listing for it. Any distinction about Jílek’s 12:46 is purely made up by us and not by them.
It’s not even close to the fastest, as I’ve already collected 46 openers under 34 seconds, with the fastest being 33.12 from Bob de Jong at the 2002 Olympic Games. This is the top 20.

I’m not doing commentary again this season, and maybe not ever again. While it was fun to do (even if I was too critical in the first few weekends), it also did suck out a bit of the joy of speedskating for me as it became too much of a job. I already turned a hobby into a job for my main income, and I’d very much like to keep speedskating a pure hobby.

In december 2018 Imke Vormeer was barred from skating the 5000m at the world cup in Poland because she hasn’t skated the time limit.
Well, she had, but only on the world cup qualifier a month earlier, and that wasn’t official enough. It was then that we started having a few foreigners participate to prevent this from happening again.
So yes, the problem has happened even though it is unlikely.
I thought the Ruby was made for middle distances, in which case Ghiotto wouldn’t use it anyway.
I think the impact might be even bigger as the athletes can probably perform better when it’s a bit warmer as well. Colder muscles aren’t great for skating the fastest.
That’s the same strategy as I use to find this stuff. It’s annoying that there isn’t some automatic results system we know about, but China does always post the lap times on the website at some point so that makes me, the lap time guy, very happy.

There are a few races I don’t know the pairs of, so the following world records might have been improvements on a previous world record set during the same competition, but that all depends on who skated first.
1:10.34 by Jeremy Wotherspoon at a Weekend Race on 08-11-1997
3:48.91 by Bart Veldkamp at the Olympic Oval Finale 1998I also have lists of the fastest openers ever skated on the 500m and 1000m since 97-98, and so far I have been able to find a grand total of:
118 openers under 9.5 sec (500 men)
86 openers under 16.2 sec (1000 men)
130 openers under 10.3 sec (500 women)
65 openers under 17.6 sec (1000 women)The 10 fastest male 500m openers are:

10.17 – Jenny Wolf – 05-12-2009 – Calgary
10.17 – Jenny Wolf – 17-01-2010 – Nagano
10.17 – Sang-Hwa Lee – 29-11-2013 – AstanaWhile with Gao and Murakami we’re seeing a lot fast openers in the last few years, the women arent doing so great. We didn’t get a single sub-10.3 opener in the past two seasons, which is very rare. The last time that happened two seasons in a row was in 02-03 and 03-04.
The fastest debut time ever is 36.52 by Jonathan Garcia, but that was at altitude in Salt Lake City, so 37.10 is definitely really good.
Magnussen’s fastest time in August still stands as that was for sea level rinks. The fastest time ever skated in August was by Keiichiro Nagashima, who skated 34.82 at the Summer Classic 2007.
Thank you! It is possible that Golovatsiuk skated a faster lap on his 35.48 last year, but he usually opens fairly well, so I’ll write this down as fastest lap skated in August.
Yes, Magnussen’s time is just a little bit faster than Golovatsiuk’s from last year, which probably means that he’s got a good season ahead of him.
Speaking his time, is there a place I can find the lap times? He might have the fastest lap skated in August as well You used to be able to see them on the SpeedSkatingNews live website, but that doesn’t work anymore.
That’s amazing and indeed a low altitude world record. Where you did get this from?
I did see that it was a different method, but I didn’t realize it was just the world cups and nothing else.
I think it’s worth redoing those seasons as excluding Sven Kramer from the top 5 best male skaters in 2014 and 2015 is clearly just wrong.
I understand that Sven Kramer often skipped world cups, but how is Bart Swings ahead of Kramer in 2014 and 2015?
Swings won zero medals at championships and one in the world cup in 2014, and once again zero at championships and 6 medals (one gold) in the world cup in 2015.
Kramer won two golds and a silver at the Olympics and five medals (all gold) in the world cup in 2014, and 3 world titles, a European title, and three world cup medals (all gold) in 2015.
Sure, Swings skated from the 1000 to the 10000 and the mass start, but I’m wondering how little you’re valuing actually winning here as I don’t think anyone would actually say that Swings was better than Kramer in either season if you asked them.
I’ll give some lap times combined with a common opener for various finishing times here.
Men 3000m:
3:38.00 = 18.5 + 7 * 28.5
3:41.50 = 18.5 + 7 * 29.0
3:45.00 = 18.5 + 7 * 29.5
3:48.50 = 18.5 + 7 * 30.0Men 5000m:
6:13.00 = 19.0 + 12 * 29.5
6:19.00 = 19.0 + 12 * 30.0
6:25.00 = 19.0 + 12 * 30.5
6:31.00 = 19.0 + 12 * 31.0Men 10000m:
12:48.00 = 35.0 + 12 * 30.5
13:00.00 = 35.0 + 12 * 31.0
13:12.00 = 35.0 + 12 * 31.5
13:24.00 = 35.0 + 12 * 32.0Women 3000m:
3:57.00 = 20.0 + 7 * 31.0
4:00.50 = 20.0 + 7 * 31.5
4:04.00 = 20.0 + 7 * 32.0
4:07.50 = 20.0 + 7 * 32.5Women 5000m:
6:50.50 = 20.5 + 12 * 32.5
6:56.50 = 20.5 + 12 * 33.0
7:02.50 = 20.5 + 12 * 33.5
7:08.50 = 20.5 + 12 * 34.0For other times you can extrapolate from these. For every 0.5 seconds slower per lap the final time increases by 3.5, 6.0, and 12.0 seconds on the 3000m, 5000m, and 10000m respectively.
Ah thank you!
Is there any info on when exactly the national team will be training in the week leading up to there? I will be in Norway near Hamar from the 4th until th 11th so I can’t catch the summer race but I’d love to see them train.
